Original IUF:

"8C.2 Chief Judge. The Chief Judge is the head X-Style official, whose primary job is to make sure the rules are followed. The Chief Judge oversees the competition, deals with protests, and answers all rules and judging questions. The Chief Judge is responsible for seeing that all judges are trained and ready. The Chief Judge is also responsible for the accuracy of all judging point tabulations and calculations."

"8C.1 X-Style Director The X-Style Director is the head organizer and administrator of X-Style events. With the Convention Host, the X-Style Director determines the system used to run the event. The X-Style Director is responsible for the logistics and equipment for all X-Style events. With the Chief Judge, the X-Style Director is in charge of keeping events running on schedule, and answers all questions not pertaining to rules and judging. The X-Style Director is the highest authority on everything to do with the X-Style competition, except for decisions on rules and results."

X-style, according to the IUF rulebook, has two officials: the X-style Director and Chief Judge. I have never had a Chief Judge appointed with me in the three years I have been the X-style director at NAUCC. So, I'm not sure if this is an organizer mistake, my mistake, or I'm not understanding these rules properly.

Nevertheless, I'm not sure having a separate Chief Judge for X-style at the NAUCC level is necessary, and we should have whoever is the freestyle Chief Judge be the X-style one (unless this is already the case and I'm misunderstanding it?). It would make sense to have a separate freestyle Chief Judge and X-Style Chief Judge at the Unicon level given how large scare the event is. But, at the NAUCC level, it seems that a separate Cheif Judge isn't necessary. Every time I have directed X-Style, I have done everything on my own and haven't had Chief Judge to help with my responsibilities. I have fulfilled all the X-Style Director's and the Chief Judge's roles as one sole director, and at the NAUCC level, it is more than feasible to have it done by one person.

So, I am proposing that we amend the definition of the X-Style's Chief Judge role so that the freestyle Chief judge can oversee this role at the NAUCC level, and give most of the responsibilities of the Chief Judge to the X-Style Director at the USA level.

Proposal for USA Amendments

The Chief Judge oversees the competition, deals with protests, and supports the X-Style director. The Chief Judge is also responsible for the accuracy of all judging point tabulations and calculations."

This makes sense to me, Dani.

The chief judge and director can be the same person. I don’t see the Rulebook excluding this possibility. I don’t think a rule change is needed.

Comment

According to the charter for the USA rulebook committee, changes to the IUF rulebook aren't part of what we should be working on.
It might be more appropriate to add language to Section 2.1 with language saying that in all disciplines at NAUCC, multiple roles may be filled by a single person.

Point taken, Connie.

Comment

Connie, what section are you referring to with 2.1?

2.1 in the 2017 USA Rulebook has nothing to do with this, I can't find any other 2.1.

Comment

I agree with Scott and Connie. We shouldn't be changing rules in this way. There are many roles at NAUCC that are filled by the same person.

Comment

I agree with Patricia's comment.

Ok, I do agree the rules do not need to be changed. I was unsure if the role could be filled by one person or not because I hadn't seen any text about that, but I understand now. Thanks.
